We have two fantastic presentations from two equally fantastic individuals: Melis Senova and Zafer Bilda.

Melis Senova recently visited Manhattan (lucky thing!) where she met with Frog Design, IDEO, Method and Parsons New School. The interaction with these agencies was very inspiring and great knowledge was shared. Melis will take us through what we can learn from these amazing trailblazers. Then Melis will lead a group discussion about Service Design in Australia. Melis is curious about how our thinking has maturing around Service Design in comparison with agencies that have been active in user-centred work for the last 4 decades. Melis will propose an initiative where we all collaboratively design the Service Design industry in Australia. How would we consciously design this new industry? Melis is Director at Huddle in Melbourne.

Zafer Bilda will present “Designing and Testing Service Experiences”. It’s challenging to design service experiences let alone measure differences in the utility and experiential value of service experiences. In this presentation, Zafer will cover how to understand an experience holistically and when to break it down to bits, how to set criteria and measure service experiences, and how to plan and test service experiences. Zafer is Experience Architecture Lead at Bienalto in Sydney.

Stephen Cox from Westpac walked us through a set of touchpoint cards which he and his team have developed and Janna DeVylder led a group discussion around the implementation of service design plans. Janna led a group discussion around the implementation of service design plans. We discussed designing for implementation and the role of the service designer within the implementation process, if at all.

Stephen walked us through a set of touchpoint cards which he and his team at Westpac have developed. Stephen talked us through the development of the cards, how the cards have been used and how they might be applied in other situations.

Janna and her colleagues (Steve Baty and Iain Barker) have had two topics accepted for the Service Design Network conference in October. Janna’s going to give us a sneak preview. If you can’t make it to Berlin in October, you should jump at this chance!

Stephen is Customer Experience Manager Online at Westpac. Stephen and his team have developed a set of touchpoint cards which help workshop participants explore the customer experience across multiple channels. Stephen is going to walk us through the development of the cards, how he’s used them so far and how they might be applied in other situations.

The Service Design Panel Discussion was hosted by Damian Kernahan (Proto Partners) and featured Rod Farmer (Mobile Experience), Opher Yom-Tov (BT Financial Group), Faruk Avdi ( NSW Department of Education and Training) and Susan Wolfe (Optimal Experience)

It starts a minute in to our discussion and runs about 66 minutes. The highlight for me was finding out that a pencil is actually a service, who knew…..

Ellie Nichol from BT Financial Group who attended the SDN Conference in Madeira last year provided some great insight into some of the hot topics from the conference and demonstrated how BT have already successfully employed these methods in their work here in Australia.

Following the presentations we had a great discussion about Service Designs’ role in Business in Australia and some ideas on communicating its increasing relevance to the Australian Service sector.

It’s always important to drink your own Coolade and following Damian’s presentation where he showcased the insights derived from using NPS for Contours,  we will over the next few days post a Net Promoter Score  on this site to garner your feedback and suggestions to make this a better Service experience.

An idea we have had sparked by Ellie’s presentation where she discussed “Customers engaging with Customers” A suggestion is that at the next SD/3 we co-create Service Design Drinks customer journey and touchpoint experience. It might be a fun way to get everyone involved in a real Service Design project and improve our own event. Love your feedback on this idea.
